My coursework as an American and Ethnic Studies major at the University of Washington, Bothell (UWB) has significantly refined my abilities as a critical and creative thinker and proficient writer. Throughout my studies, I have immersed myself in a diverse array of texts, which has deepened my understanding of how sociocultural experiences influence individual interpretations and narratives.

I have developed a keen ability to analyze complex themes and synthesize information, allowing me to engage with material at a deeper level. This analytical skill set enables me to identify the central questions and concerns that underlie the works of various authors and theorists. I have honed my capacity to evaluate differing perspectives, emphasizing the importance of context and lived experiences in shaping divergent viewpoints.

My coursework has not only sharpened my critical thinking skills but has also encouraged me to approach issues with creativity, enriching my writing with nuanced insights that reflect a broad understanding of social dynamics. Ultimately, these experiences have equipped me with the tools to contribute thoughtfully to discussions on race, ethnicity, and identity, fostering a greater appreciation for the complexity of human experiences in our multifaceted society.

A prime example of my creative thinking is my written work titled “Earth Under My Feet.” In this piece, I reflect on my experiences with reconstructive hip surgery, the subsequent loss of my ability to dance, and the journey toward a new understanding of myself. The essay recounts the invasive surgery I underwent and the complications I faced due to a failed epidural. I explore how I found a sense of safety within myself while enduring the pain of a fractured pelvis, and how this experience has reshaped my perspective on my body and identity. This work was submitted as an artifact for a Memory Work Archive assignment in the Approaches to Cultural Research course. Its significance lies in its deep self-reflection, as it examines themes of loss and physical suffering. This piece is a testament to my abilities as a writer and storyteller.

My research paper, “Violence Against Women and Girls Following Natural Disasters,” exemplifies my abilities as a critical thinker. In this work, I argue that incidents of gender-based violence have been reported to increase in the aftermath of natural disasters, and I highlight a significant gap in both research and response to this issue. The paper underscores the necessity for further investigation to effectively address the escalating violence faced by women and girls, particularly as climate change leads to more frequent and severe natural disasters globally. Written as a final research project for the Human Rights and Climate Chaos course in the Spring quarter of 2024, this paper is a crucial addition to my portfolio. It showcases my skills as a researcher and academic writer, integrating legal, ethical, and environmental considerations surrounding gender violence—key topics within my field of study.
