My experience as a student at the Interdisciplinary Arts School of the University of Washington has afforded me a wealth of opportunities to cultivate and refine my collaborative skills in diverse and dynamic environments. Engaging in various team projects has allowed me to gain valuable insights into the collaborative process, where I learned to identify the dimensions of our work and effectively organize and enhance group work.
Throughout my work on collaborative projects, I have become adept at navigating the outcomes of collective decisions, ensuring that each team member's voice is heard and valued. By maintaining a steadfast focus on the overarching goals of our projects, I have developed a keen ability to pursue specific tasks while keeping the team aligned and motivated towards our shared objectives.
My time at the university has also enabled me to evaluate and incorporate the rich experiences of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds, each contributing unique strengths and perspectives. This has greatly informed my skills in active listening—a crucial component in understanding differing viewpoints and fostering an inclusive environment.
Additionally, I have sharpened my abilities in conflict mediation, allowing me to facilitate productive discourse and resolve disagreements that may arise during collaboration. I have assumed various roles within teams, sometimes as a leader, organizer, or supportive collaborator, depending on the needs of the group and the nature of the project.
Reflecting on our collaborative efforts has been equally important to my growth. I engage in critical and creative reflection, analyzing the processes we undertake as well as the outcomes we achieve. This introspection has deepened my understanding of effective and respectful communication, particularly when engaging with differences in opinion, style, and approach. By exploring these dynamics, I have become more adept at fostering a respectful, collaborative atmosphere that celebrates diversity and encourages innovative thinking.
For my group project in the Introduction to Feminist Studies course during Fall 2023, I played an integral role as a collaborator in the creation of a podcast-style round-table discussion centered on the La Manada, or Wolf Pack Case, that garnered widespread attention in Spain. This particular case involved the sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman during the San Fermin festival in Pamplona, and it spurred significant public outrage and debate about sexual violence and feminist activism.
In this project, I undertook a variety of responsibilities that were crucial to our overall success. I conducted extensive research, meticulously gathering both academic and media sources, including court documents, news articles, and written accounts that detailed the events surrounding the case. Additionally, I included academic literature that explored themes such as the societal implications of sexual assault, the evolution of global feminist movements, and the legislative reforms that emerged as a response to this incident.
My writing duties involved synthesizing this information into a coherent narrative that would be both informative and engaging for our audience. I focused on providing context, analyzing societal attitudes toward sexual violence, and discussing how the case resonated with ongoing discussions surrounding consent and women's rights. To ensure clarity and flow, I also took charge of the editing process, refining our script and coordinating the contributions of my group members to create a polished final product. Through this project, I not only deepened my understanding of feminist theory but also honed my skills in collaborative research and multimedia communication.
