Vanaman, Amanda. Earth Under My Feet, Summer 2024, Approaches to Cultural Research
In the piece, the author describes her experiences with reconstructive hip surgery, losing the ability to dance, and finding a new understanding of herself through it all. The essay details an invasive surgery and a failed epidural. Vanaman describes finding safety in herself while being subjected to the pain of a broken pelvis and how that has reoriented her views on her body and self. The work was submitted as an artifact for a Memory Work Archive assignment for the Approaches to Cultural Research course.
The significance of this writing is that it is deeply self-reflective. It examines loss and physical pain. This piece of writing represents my ability as a writer and storyteller.

Vanaman, Amanda. Essay 2, Spring 2023, Honors Symposium
This work is a comparative essay in which the author discusses two books and how they represent happiness and meaning in life. Vanaman analyzes the readings and argues her own perspectives regarding finding happiness and whether that is an achievable and worthwhile goal. This essay was an assigned final essay for the Honors Symposium course.
This essay demonstrates my writing at the beginning of my higher education pursuit. It displays a strong foundation and can be used to highlight how I have grown as a writer. It also exemplifies my ability to argue my perspectives and opinions in a more philosophical context.

Vanaman, Amanda. Violence Against Women and Girls Following Natural Disasters, Spring 2024, Human Rights and Climate Chaos
In this research paper, Vanaman argues that there is an increase in gender violence seen following natural disasters and that there is a void in research and response to the matter. The paper outlines the importance of further research to properly address this increased violence against women and girls, as climate change brings about more extreme natural disasters worldwide. The paper was written as a final research paper for the Human Rights and Climate Chaos course in Spring quarter of 2024.
This paper is significant to my portfolio as it shows my ability as a researcher and academic writer. It incorporates legal, ethical, and environmental considerations regarding gender violence. These are important subjects as they are areas I would ultimately like to work with.

Vanaman, Amanda. Curatorial Statement, Summer 2024, Approaches to Cultural Research.
Vanaman writes about her process in constructing a memory work project and her findings. She describes her thinking behind the artifacts she included in her work and relates them back to the course content. Vanaman highlights the importance of memory work and interviews as sources. The statement was written as an introduction to a final project for the Approaches to Cultural Research course in the Summer quarter of 2024.
This Curatorial Statement benefits my portfolio by demonstrating my use of primary sources and ability to assemble a cohesive project. The statement reflects the memory work process and displays my work on a large, creative project.
